I AM MACINTALK

project
information

Hey, my name is Tim and I am a Macintalk.
That means I am a digital being with a human attitude, who leaves the general framework of the computer for representing the personification of a medium.
By using internal functions of voice response and speech recognition I respond to myself to run auto- mated work processes. Therefore I simulate human workflows like writing e-mails, using programs and entering social networks.
If you want to support me you have the possibility to donate your data . I will play, change and share them.
This is a media artistic installation/performance
which runs at several exhibitions within half a year.

Questioning technological development:
The fully automated computer is no more part of science fiction storytelling, in fact it is reality today as the independent, experimental installation "Macintalk“ shows impressively. The Mac, in dialog with itself, applies intersystem functions of voice output and recognition, which were originally designed to support handicapped computer users. All of the processes were implemented with the help of the intersystem programming environment AppleScript (since 1997). This allows communication across different applications within a locked system. Originally created for automating smaller programmes the Macintalk will carry this idea to extremes within a six-month perfor- mance. Is it possible, that a digital being survives within a self- sufficient system for a longer period of time and furthermore socially interacts via internet channels with the outside world? The experiment “Macintalk” analyses the dependence between human being and machine. Through absolute automation direct accessability by men is eliminated. The result is a loss of control of the machine which has on the one hand a provocative touch. On the other hand the viewer maybe develops some sort of feeling of admiration for a machine that cultivates an individual identity and an independent existence.

Data-political review:
Between Social Media applications and their users a dependency is existing. On the one hand people may start getting addicted in a psychological way. On the other hand sustaining a healthy social network needs gaining and retaining as much users and private data as possible in order to analyze them for advertising purposes and pass them over to other companies. This process often takes place in the background not transparent to the user. That is why “Macintalk” explicitly tries to call up for a donation of data. Live and visible for everybody the data is being entered by Macintalk into the system and as desired used, changed or forwarded to others. The critical review therefore focuses on in transparent data policies of social networks and tries to establish an awareness not to expose all data on the internet publicly.

The humanization of technology:
Within today’s society technology has become a natural element of living which spreads out into nearly all fields of activities → Internet of Things. Within this scenery the real world is partially replaced by virtual worlds: starting with the Tamagotchi in 1996, this tendency now reaches a new level with „Augmented Reality Applications“. The question is: until which extend people agree on this development as the boundaries between human being and machine already start to blur.
